  79. However, the first receiver local oscillator of cellphones *do* cover 
  80. 915-940 MHz. If you're going to tear into a cellphone, you can use this 
  81. LO signal as a source. (If you know the service codes, you can lock the 
  82. phone on any channel you like.) This makes a good cheap signal generator
  83. for the 915-925 MHz amateur allocation.

  138. I can't think of any reason it would be a problem.  The advantage is

  201. Yes, the HTX-202 is a good 2 meter HT. The only rig in its price class
  202. is the Alinco 2 meter HT, and it isn't as good at rejecting out of band
  203. signals.

  218. Comet base and mobile antennas are *much* better than the MFJ antennas you 
  219. list. Larsen mobile antennas are also excellent. There should be no problem
  220. mounting your base antenna on an old TV mast as long as it can stand the
  221. wind load. If you remove the old TV antenna first, it probably will. If
  222. the budget is really tight, a copper pipe J-pole will do nicely. You can
  223. make this for less than $25. As to cable, the *best* flexible cable is 
  224. Belden 9913 at about $0.60 per foot. It's worth it if you're only going to 
  225. be running HT power. (Actually I think good cable is always worth it, but it 
  226. becomes especially important when you can't afford to lose much power to the 
  227. cable.)

  252. First of all, the FCC *regulation* in question only waives liability
  253. under *FCC regulations* for out of service contacts. It does not offer
  254. blanket immunity from prosecution for violation of federal, state, or
  255. local laws. As I understand this case, the sheriff charged the ham with
  256. interference with an officer because of his transmissions on the sheriff's
  257. dispatch channel. The issue of out of band transmission is only tangental
  258. to this charge since the *method* used to break state law is irrelevant
  259. to the charge.

  350. to a specific speaker's voice characteristics.  The most advanced 
  351. systems are pushing at the problem of general-purpose speech
  352. recognition, but the problem is not yet solved, at least using hardware
  353. that you could afford.

  356. if someone could give me a reference.

  371. Since there's lots of take here lately regarding Kantronics software for
  372. the MAC, and software for the PK-223, I'll start this one...
  373.  
  374. Does anyone know of any better PC software for the KAM? I have recently
  375. upgraded to the 7.0 version of the KAM and revision 3.2 of their
  376. HostMaster II+ software. I am getting more interested in it w/PACTOR and
  377. G-TOR, but don't really like their software package.

  379. So I can have my log open as well, I'm running HostMaster under Windows
  380. (which it does just fine).
  381.  
  382. What I don't like about the package is you must always have an HF and
  383. VHF window displayed. You can cut these down to 2-lines but I think it's
  384. just implemented badly. Function keys are tripled-up with CTRL & ALT.
  385. Even though they tried to make it consistent, they're not easy to
  386. remember if you jump around modes. I think radio-buttons would do a much
  387. nicer job.

  390. window for each connection get my bucks.  Anyone know of something?  Or

  424. I have seen a much better intefaced. It even supports a mouse.
  425. With the mouse I can click on any paramenter ie standby to  listen.

  467. I work at a lab of about thirty people researching and developing speech
  468. recognition technology.  Maybe I can shed some light on this issue.
  469.  
  470. Alan is correct in many ways, although I imagine many researchers in
  471. speech recognition would hasten to correct him.  
  472.  
  473. I believe the key notion here is "affordable".  You see, on the one
  474. hand, there do exist high-end systems that support large vocabularies
  475. (25,000 to 50,000 words), continuous speech (you don't have to pause
  476. between words), and speaker-independence (any person can talk to the
  477. system).  On the other hand, these systems are very expensive for
  478. oridinary folks off the street, like you and me.  We're hams, not
  479. Fortune 500 companies!
  480.  
  481. Systems that are affordable -- and we're still looking at $3,000 to
  482. $7,000 here for systems with reasonable performance -- are in fact
  483. limited in vocabulary size (3,000 to 5,000 words), require isolated
  484. words (you - speak - like - this), and are speaker-dependent (works very
  485. well for you after you train it for half an hour).  Many people find
  486. this level of performance adequate.  Some are very happy with it.  
  487. Others find it lacking, or unacceptable.
  488.  
  489. So Al is right.  We've still got a ways to go.
  490.  
  491. Good news is that as computers become more powerful and fall in cost, it
  492. becomes easier to run high-end speech recognition systems.  This is
  493. because most high-end speech recognition systems require powerful
  494. workstations to run.  A significant portion of cost nowadays is
  495. hardware.  In a few years, most folks can have access to reasonable
  496. systems, without the need for specialized DSP boards.  Your IBM PC with
